Happy Birthday, Hugh Brodie

Approximately 25 years ago, I walked into a cocktail party with 300+ people. On the other side of the room as far as I could see was a tall, thin, gorgeous gentleman with bright white hair. He stood about 6 or 7 inches above everybody else. I worked my way through the crowd and walked up to a total stranger by the name of Hugh Brodie, the ultimate jazzman. His cousin was Ella Fitzgerald. It’s one of the very few times I started a conversation by saying, “You’re absolutely one of the most amazing people I have ever seen, would love to have you come into my studio and have you do an environmental portrait.” That was the start of a quarter of a century friendship which is as strong today as it was then. He’s my brother and I love him. Tomorrow, 20 or 30 musicians are going to get together and play for his birthday at The Roscoe Nursing Home/Rehab in Roscoe, New York.

Happy Birthday William!

You have to love the internet. It’s filled with so much information, it’s virtually impossible to keep up with it. Every once in a while, however, the internet will be wrong. I know Bill Shatner is an Aries, we share that sign together. But according to Wikapedia, he’s 84. Wrong! He’s not 84, he’s 44! I’ve had the opportunity and absolute pleasure to work with Bill on a few projects and to spend time with him both outside and inside the country. Rest assured, he can outthink, outread, outwork, and outact any 25 year old person on the planet. Oh, I knew I forgot something – he can also outride anybody on the planet! He’s not only a great actor, writer, and entrepreneur, he’s also one hell of a cowboy. If there’s two things he loves, it’s speed and horses. Oops! Forgot Liz! She’s first.

Happy birthday Bill, have a good day and a little sip of champagne for me. Give Liz a hug and a kiss.

Health and happiness,

Joe D.

Happy Birthday Gerry

To all the ships at sea,

I would like to share a little story about my 35th birthday.  Gerry Cooney showed up at my studio and delivered a beautiful birthday gift.  The box was unbelievably light, but it was wrapped beautifully, it had a beautiful card. I opened it up, and it was a black negligee, size petit.  I said, “Gerry, I’ll never fit in this.”  He said, “you’ll figure out something to do with it.”  So Gerry, happy 29th birthday… oops, I mean 39th birthday, oops.  You’ll always be forever young.  In writing my memoirs, I have four chapters on Gerry Cooney, my publisher is insisting I get them down to one reasonably large chapter, which I will do.

Happy Birthday My Son

August 5th is etched into my heart and my soul.  As the truth be none, it’s etched into every cell of my body. I never realized how important the day would be.  My first son Joseph was born that day.  He was one and 7.9 pounds – a premie.  I was told his chances of survival were not good.  He was placed in an incubator and left the hospital a total of 72 days later. He grew up to be an extremely bright, beautiful, wonderful young man. He beat all odds and fought with every fiber of his being to tackle his last obstacle which was Leukemia.  I don’t want to think he lost that battle but rather moved to a better place. I miss him twenty or thirty times a day. He will always be with me and in my heart forever.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOSEPH.
