FILL THE FRAME Hit Thirteen

To All the Ships at Sea,

In a world moving at light speed, yes I’ve used this saying before…  To have 4 consecutive great days is almost unheard of.  Well, I’ve had 5 great days.  It started out good and ended fabulous.  My book FILL THE FRAME hit 13 on Amazon. Sean Strub of the hotel Fauchére hosted a book signing for literary club which was extremely successful.  The one hour presentation lasted 2 hours.  I was totally honored that people came to hear me and purchase a copy of my book.  I guess I will have to start working on FILL THE FRAME II.

I wanted Star Trek’s William Shatner as a celebrity guest & co-host when I was hosting The Canon Photo Safari. We finally connected in 1999, for a segment being filmed in Israel. I didn’t know much about him; I was no Trekkie, but for some reason Bill had always fascinated me.

One typically torrid morning at 4:30, we set off for some far-flung location, and by 3:30 that afternoon it was even hotter. Bill and I were sitting shoulder to shoulder on a stone wall, gazing out at a magnificent ruin, when he glanced at me and said, “You know Joe, you look really hot.”

“Well, it’s warm,” I said, “but I’m not that hot.”

“Well, you really look really hot.”

“What can I say? It’s hot.””

“You know what? You also look very, very tired.”

“Well, I’m not that tired.”

“But you really look tired. You look very hot, and you look very tired. Actually, you look exhausted.”
“I’m really not exhausted.” “No, you really are exhausted.”

At that point, we paused. I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, sometimes it takes two or three kicks under the table for me to catch on. I looked at the director, and said, “I’m feeling a little queasy, I’m very hot, and I’m really tired. I’d like to go back to the kibbutz, and relax a bit. Is there any way we could make up the work tomorrow?”

The director said, “Well, if you’re not up to it . . .”

Doreen Jacob

To All The Ships At Sea –

Anybody who knows me knows I’ve used the expression “I am one of the luckiest people in the world.”  One reason for that is I’ve met so many great people over the years.  My friend Simon Jacob is one of the most important.  Simon has taken us into his family. Simon and all the Jacob family was extremely blessed to have Doreen Jacob as the Matriarch of their tribe.  She’s was beautiful on the outside as well as so beautiful on in the inside.  Doreen was a very warm, caring strong, and spiritual woman that lit up the room when she entered it.

We will always hold beautiful thoughts of her in our hearts.  When she opened up the doors to her home to us,  she helped us to understand more about the true meaning of family and friendship.  I know Doreen’s soul will live within all of us.  She has just moved to a higher place and one day we hope to meet her again.  We thank her for her lessons.  Both JoAnne and I were truly blessed to know her in this life.

To all the ships at sea,

It seems like when the world gets together between December 24th and January 2nd, friends and family come together on many different levels. It’s a time for remembrance and love; it’s a time to celebrate, a time to party and a time to forget differences; it’s a time to be warm and fuzzy. Then again, some people are warm and fuzzy 365 days a year- you know who you are!  Anybody who’s read any of my blogs or tweets knows that I’m the luckiest guy in the world.  Approximately three decades ago,  my brother Amir Orly from Israel introduced me to a young man by the name of Simon Jacob. Simon Jacob basically adopted me as a part of his family. Simon has one of the most magnificent families I have ever seen: great mother and father, great brothers, great cousins, and great children, of which there are many. One day, Simon and I were out photographing aircraft along with his very young son Shimshon; Simon asked if we could stop for 15 minutes to pray with his son. Of course, the answer was yes. That’s how long I’ve known him, I watched him grow up.

About 7 months ago, I visited Simon. Shimshon is now a full grown man and a rabbi who lives in Israel. He showed me the outline he had for his institute for very special kids who would come from all over the world to study with him, and I was so taken with it that I volunteered to teach for two weeks at the institute as soon as it was up and running. I would love to have the ability to write a substantial check but giving my time is a better fit for me at this time (although I have made a financial contribution to the institute). A few weeks ago, he sent me a letter addressed to “Uncle” Joe. I was so flattered that he called me “Uncle” Joe, and I am an uncle to him. It put such a smile on my face that he made my pre-holiday season.

In all the years that I have been on this planet, I have never asked anybody to do something like this. This is a personal email to everybody, it’s not just a form letter. I’d like everybody to take a look at the institute, watch the short GoFundMe video below, and please make a donation if you are comfortable doing so.  Any amount is fine. To tell you the truth, I think it will make you feel really good at a time of year when we want to feel really good about everything.

This is Joe DiMaggio wishing you a healthy, happy, warm holiday season. Remember to live, love, laugh, be happy and smile. Life is good, life is great.

Whether you’re a Christian, Jew, Muslim, or atheist you must visit Israel. It is the Center of all Religions and all Civilizations. It is living history that one can see, palpably feel and we are offering you the opportunity to photographically capture.

In any given year millions of people visit Israel  – over a million from the U.S. alone. There are many travel agencies that specifically deal with the Middle East and the number of guides are astronomical.  Given that set of circumstances, one should ask why go with us? Internationally known photographer/filmmakerJoe DiMaggio and World Class Guide Amir Or-ly have worked together for almost three decades and have become brothers. Amir and Joe met while shooting a TV show for ESPN. The show was called The Photo Safari which Joe hosted along with co-host celebrity, amateur photographer, world traveler –William Shatner and is still being rerun on OLN network. DiMaggio felt that is was Amir – his knowledge, his humor and his ability to change course in a manner of seconds, who was the glue  that helped make the show so successful.

Joe and Amir want to extend that synergy. They want to take you on a semi-private tour of Israel and share their passion and knowledge of land along with their unique photographic experience and vision.

Some facts about Amir – his credentials are impressive. He’s escorted Heads of State, Presidents, Kings, Hollywood Celebrities, Writers, Politicians and insured that every one of them, to a man or woman have had a highly memorable and successful visit.

Joe and Amir, along with Superb Tourist Services Ltd. (a highly respected Israel based Tour Operator), have put together a program that we hope will be your holiday of a lifetime. You will return home with both a thorough understanding of the history of Israel, the land and it’s varied people, as well as come away with truly amazing Photography and Video Imagery.

To All The Ships At Sea

Yes it’s been a long time since I’ve done a blog. I’ve been on location, shooting, editing and working on a new documentary.

The most important thing in my life these days is time.  I’d like to take a little bit of time out and tell a story about two beautiful people.  My brother Amir and his beautiful wife Hannah.  They live in a beautiful home on the West Bank in Israel and have an amazing family. It’s a home filled with love, understanding, compassion and true caring.  This is a family that doesn’t see hate or prejudice. They’re always looking at the beautiful Sun in the desert they call Israel.  It’s a special time as Passover is right around the corner.  In a world that is moving at light speed (yes I used it again,) we all need to take a breath and really enjoy the sunrises, sunsets, smell the flowers.  A hug, a kiss are both wonderful things that are free. So Hannah I wish you a great journey.  I’ve included a few photos from our Book A Land of Milk & Honey.
