THE BORSCHT BELT by Marisa Scheinfeld

Book by Marissa Scheinfeld

To All the Ships at Sea

My studio manager heard me talking about a book by Marisa Scheinfeld. Suddenly what appeared under my tree was Marissa’s book which was a wonderful gift. Now to give you a little background.  Marissa’s dad Barry has been my sports medicine Doctor for the last three decades.  A great Doctor and aka Dr. Blues.  What I find unbelievable is that last week was Hugh Brodie’s birthday and my next blog is going to be what transpired at this party.  You can’t make this up.  Marisa as an aspiring photographer who came to my studio and delivered Jazz man Hugh Brodie for a portrait session for his new album.  It is a small world.  Here it’s many years later and she’s not only an accomplished photographer but now has a great book of her own as well.  It’s all about history.  Here is a link to an e mail I just received

House Call in Old Havana

To all the ships at sea,

I know you’re going to find this hard to believe but Murphy even travels to Cuba! As a matter of fact, Murphy has a pretty much free reign in Cuba -one little slip on a cobblestone pothole and I went down like a ton of bricks. No big deal, I know how to fall… well, I did something to my back. When I went back to our pencion (B&B), our host family turned me on to some local doctors and, believe it or not, they made a house call. Not one, but two- a doctor and a technician. They came in with a tens unit, the typical doctor’s bag, and went through a whole protocol on trying to piece me back together again. Yes, there was ice then there was heat then a fabulous massage. We ran that tens unit on 220, it was really great. The interesting part about it was that the doctor was President Obama! Now I know you may find that hard to believe, the president of the U.S. stopped by my room to make sure I was okay. They pieced me up so I could finish my shoot in Old Havana but more importantly, it was just the way that they went out of their way to make sure that I was okay. Not to be outdone, on return to Miami and then to Boca Raton, I had a fabulous doctor in the ER at Boca West at 11 o’clock in the evening. A five hour wait was cut down to 20 minutes, then they gave me an epidural and prescription medicine for my back with a recommendation for acupuncture and a massage. I had the greatest massage I had ever had from a Taiwanese master masseuse and then the acupuncture was unbelievable. Everybody came together to piece Humpty Dumpy back together again… oops that’s not my name! It’s Dumpty Humpy….no, I think its Joe DiMaggio. It’s surprising what service you can get with a white beard, man when these people find out I’m 28 years old they’ll be angry! Medicine from Cuba, to Miami, to Boca, to New York- it’s all good. It’s actually all great!

New York City Subways

To all the ships at sea,

Anyone who’s travelled to Italy, France, Germany, etc., you have to love the rail system.  It’s amazing, it’s great, it’s cost effective, it’s safe.  The NYC Subway System may not have the luxury, but if you have to get from point A to point B, it’s a great choice.  Unless of course, you have a Mercedes Limo, a driver, and security… but even with that, sometimes with the traffic, you’re better off with the subway.  I love photographing in the subway, it’s a little known fact that you’re allowed to photograph/film in the subway as long as you don’t have a tripod (double check the law.)  A dear friend of mine, Bill DeSmedt, author of “Singularity” and “Dualism,” attached is a portrait I did of him, notice the sign behind his head.  That puts it into perspective.  While you’re at it, check out his books, they’re quite good.  The other graphic is just me having fun.  Sometimes we forget, photography is about the fun.

Saint Patty’s vs. Chinese New Year

To all the ships at sea,

Everybody knows about Murphy, my god, yesterday was Saint Patty’s day, Murphy was all over the place.  When you combine Murphy with a senior moment (even though I’m an adolescent immature senior), you come up with Oh my God I forgot.  I wrote a beautiful note to Terri on the quality of her photographs but forgot to post them on the blog, consider them now posted.  Terri you have my apologies.

TIME Magazine Assignment

I had a half hour off the other day. Decided to just look through some of my old TIME magazine and Sports Illustrated assignments and I stumbled across this photo that I did for them to celebrate the opening of Giant Stadium. I was totally blown away when I heard they were going to build a new stadium. It seems like yesterday they just built a new stadium. Of course, a businessman friend of mine explained that it’s all about the super boxes and the Fortune 500. Well, considering my only interest is between the goal line and the goal line, a super box just doesn’t do it for me. If TIME asks me to go and shoot the new one, it’s gonna take me a little longer to get to the birds’ eye perch.  See you at the game!
